DSPR12 SEM1 HS1: Web Research Task

This research task is about Workplace Health and Safety in Queensland. The source for this information is the Queensland Government's Workplace Health and Safety Website - http://www.dir.qld.gov.au/workplace.

Act
The legislation that relates to Workplace Health and Safety in Queensland is the Workplace Health and Safety Act 1995 (Qld).

A PDF version of the Act can be found at: http://www.legislation.qld.gov.au/LEGISLTN/CURRENT/W/WorkplHSaA95.pdf

The purpose of the Act is to make Queensland workplaces safer through improved work practices and conditions. It does this by setting out the laws relating to the health and safety requirements of a workplace and by establishing a framework to prevent or minimise workers’ exposure to risk.

Regulation
The regulation that relates to Workplace Health and Safety in Queensland is the Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 1997 (Qld).

A PDF version of the Regulation can be found at: http://www.legislation.qld.gov.au/LEGISLTN/CURRENT/W/WorkplHSaR97.pdf

The Regulation sets out the legal requirements of workplaces to ensure employees are not exposed to undue risk that may cause injury or death. The Regulation also prescribes methods to minimise or prevent exposure to risks.

Codes of Practice
Codes of Practice provide specific, practical advice on how to manage exposure to risk in workplaces that have a recognised increased risk of injury or death.

Ministerial Notice
Ministerial notices are urgent workplace warnings that are issued when a situation arises that puts someone at serious risk of harm at, or near, a workplace.

Such notices override any existing regulation.

General Obligations (as an employee)
Generally, an employee’s obligations under the Act or Regulation are as follows:

  • to comply with the workplace health and safety instructions given at the workplace by the employer
  • to use all personal protective equipment provided by the employer
  • not to misuse or interfere with health and safety equipment provided at the workplace
  • not to put at risk the safety of any other person at the workplace
  • not to deliberately hurt themselves.

In a Graphic Design workplace, the following health and safety issues may arise:

  • Electrical equipment (printers, computers, etc) may be faulty. Equipment should be checked regularly by a qualified electrician.
  • Scalpels used for mock-ups need to be properly stored and disposed of to prevent accidental stabs or cuts.
  • Heavy items such as boxes of paper should be lifted correctly (knees bent, back straight) to prevent back strain. There should be adequate signage on display where paper is stored.

DSPR12 SEM1 Week 3 Posting: Positive/Negative Space

In this exercise, we were asked to manipulate graphic space effectively for balance of positive and negative spaces using one of our initials in 10 different outcomes. The aim was to make the negative shapes so powerful that they became positive.

I had "t" and "m" to choose from.

The limitations were:
  • use black and white only
  • we could change the case of the font but not the typeface
  • we could vary the format of the page from portrait to landscape
  • no letter was to be made less than 50% of its original size set in the first initial
  • the same letter had to be used in all 10 outcomes
  • the letter must be legible.
At the end, I wished my name was Susan or Belinda!

A useful website about Typography

Perception of Fonts: Perceived Personality Traits and Uses (http://psychology.wichita.edu/surl/usabilitynews/81/PersonalityofFonts.htm)
The Perception of Fonts website provides information on the results of a study that sought to determine if fonts have personality traits.

To do so, the researchers surveyed over 500 people on their perceived attributes of 20 fonts of different family types (Serif, Sans-Serif, Modern, Monospace, Script/Funny).

The survey results suggested that indeed fonts do have personality traits based on their design family.

The Art School Online - Color Theory & Mixing website provides 16 lessons in colour theory including: the colour wheel, the history of colour, the meaning of colour, colour psychology, and the importance of value in colour. The lessons are very hands-on, requiring the student to complete practical drawing and painting exercises.

DSPR12 SEM1 Week 3 Posting: What is a Blog & How I Will Use My Blog

A blog (derived from "web log") is a user-generated website where people post journal-style entries, often on a particular subject however some blogs are used as more personal online diaries. Entries are displayed in reverse chronological order.

Typically blogs contain text, images and links to other relevant websites. An important part of blogs is the fact readers can leave comments, making the experience interactive.

I will use my blog to upload assessments for TAFE and record graphic design inspirations.

DSPR12 SEM1 Week 3 Posting: About Me

Why am I here? Most days I'm a public servant for the Queensland Government but Thursdays and Fridays I get to loosen fonts from their shackles and immerse myself in the history of graphic design. Some days it's hard to go back to work.

At the end of 5 years (that's how long it's going to take me to get through at this rate) I want to be able to work as a creative/art director for an ad agency or in publishing. I haven't decided yet. In the meantime I want to use the skills I'm learning to illustrate a children's book I've written.
